Turkey at the Crossroads of European Energy Politics

The availability of energy has become crucial for the economies of all the developed and the developing countries of the world. As the sources of energy are scarce and scattered, their transportation and storage are of concern to all the industrialized countries of the world. These countries now want to ensure that their supply of energy is safe and secure and there are no stoppages in its flow and availability. Therefore, energy security has assumed a high place in the agendas of these states. The European Union, whose member states are totally dependent on energy supplies from outside, has also placed energy security high on its agenda.1 The EU is actively seeking to diversify its sources of energy supply, besides paying attention to the efficient use of energy. It wants to ensure that it has a resilient supply system which would not be affected by disruptive events. The EU is one of the biggest consumers of energy besides China and India.2
