Turkish doctors performed the world’s first embryo transfer Monday into a woman who received a new womb from a cadaver.
Born without a uterus, Derya Sert was the first woman in the world to receive a uterus from a dead donor in 2011. After waiting 18 months to ensure the organ is functioning properly, Turkish doctors Monday transferred one of eight frozen embryos into Sert that were created using her own eggs and her husband’s sperm. Doctors say it will be 10 days before they can determine whether the embryo implants and pregnancy achieved.
