Pro-death penalty stance could prevent Turkey's EU membership

If the Turkish prime minster moves away from Turkey's accession obligations and commitments, he will have to accept that EU candidacy for his country will be jeopardised – warns Hannes Swoboda MEP
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayipp Erdogan's statement in favour of reinstating the death penalty is disappointing, provocative and incompatible with European standards and values. Turkish authorities must understand that Turkey as a European Union candidate country for accession has rights but also obligations.
