Turkey progresses in wrong direction
From Mr Tayfun Balkan.
Sir, With reference to your editorial “Turkey and the EU” (November 15): one needs to separate economic progress from political progress – that is, if one can call what has been happening politically “progress”. In actual fact, politically it can be called progress if you are an Islamist; however, I would like to remind the world that when the Turkish Republic was established in 1923, the cornerstone of the new republic was not Islam and religion, but a truly secular establishment based on western democracies, unlike now.
