After the Hunger Strike

When winter hits Turkey, the fighting between the Army and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (P.K.K.), which has been going on for nearly thirty years now, tends to slow. The P.K.K. is based in a mountainous region on the border with Iraq, and snow isolates its fighters—and creates new dangers for government forces. Earlier this month, seventeen Turkish soldiers were killed when their helicopter crashed in the mountains because of bad weather.

Middle East: Israeli failure at UN result of political oversight says Livni
Israel's expected "failure" at the UN General Assembly on Thursday is the result of ongoing political oversight, The Tzipi Livni Party leader Tzipi Livni said Wednesday, ahead of the Palestinian bid for a status upgrade.
"When Israel does not instigate and lead initiatives, initiatives are forced upon it," she said.
Engaging in a political process with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas, and striving for an agreement is our interest, that would preserve Israel as a Zionist, Jewish and democratic state, she continued.
"Within two weeks, the world will recognize - because of the failures of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's government - a Hamas state in Gaza, and a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders," she added.

The Turkish Economy Meets EU Entry Criteria
BERLIN -- Until recently, Turkey was a country that had to borrow from the IMF. But positive developments over the last ten years have led Turkey to become a country that now lends to the IMF, instead.
Our ability to do this is a result of policies of fiscal discipline we have implemented since our own crisis in 2001. In the past, we had debts to the IMF of $20 billion. Now that is down to $1.7 billion. Our central bank has reserves of $115 billion.

Why U.S. should rethink policy over Syria's Kurds

Editor’s note: Michael Rubin is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and senior lecturer at the Naval Postgraduate School. The views expressed are his own.
Twenty months after the Syrian uprising began, only one thing is certain: However the conflict ends, the face of Syria is forever changed. The terror inflicted on the population by government forces and the shabiha militia has not been random. Rather, President Bashar al-Assad has moved to carve out a safe-haven for the Alawi minority of which he is a member and which dominates the government. Though kidnappings, murders, and mortar attacks appear indiscriminate, their targets are often the Sunni majority in towns and countryside the Alawis want for their own enclave’s integrity.

Turkey stands out on emerging Europe's edge
By Patrick Smith | Tue, 27/11/2012 - 14:50
With the seemingly intractable problems of the eurozone on its doorstep, it's easy to see why Eastern Europe is a risky investment prospect.
Many of the region's banks come under eurozone-domiciled ownership and the eurozone is also an important export market. It means when the West sneezes, the East catches a cold.
However, the region's stockmarkets haven't fared too badly - as at 1 November the Amundi MSCI Emerging Europe ex Russia (CE9) exchange traded fund is up 7% and 1% over six months and one year respectively. Undoubtedly the brightest star has been Turkey - the HSBC MSCI Turkey (HTRY) ETF shows gains of 22% and 28% over six months and year respectively.

Turkey progresses in wrong direction
From Mr Tayfun Balkan.
Sir, With reference to your editorial “Turkey and the EU” (November 15): one needs to separate economic progress from political progress – that is, if one can call what has been happening politically “progress”. In actual fact, politically it can be called progress if you are an Islamist; however, I would like to remind the world that when the Turkish Republic was established in 1923, the cornerstone of the new republic was not Islam and religion, but a truly secular establishment based on western democracies, unlike now.

More reporters are jailed in Turkey than in any other country in the world. According to CPJ's recent survey, at least 61 are imprisoned directly for their work, representing the second biggest media crackdown in the 27 years we have been documenting such records. (Only Turkey itself has rivaled the extent of this crackdown, when it jailed 78 journalists in 1996.) In the country hailed as the model moderate Islamic republic, how is this possible?

INSIGHT: Turkey’s Crackdown on Academic Freedom
November 19, 2012 By Howard Eissenstat
In Turkey, it is not “publish or perish” that scholars must fear. It is prison.
There was a time, not very long ago, when Turkey seemed on the edge of a new era of academic and intellectual freedom. New private universities created institutional support for more independent scholarship, while the Turkish government showed at least grudging willingness to allow debate of formerly “taboo subjects.” For example, in 2005, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), after initial hesitation, publicly supported the first conference in Turkey that seriously examined the Armenian Genocide. It soon became apparent, however, that the AK Party’s vision of academic freedom has clear limits.

Is Öcalan the Key to Negotiations with Turkey?
Posted 18 November 2012 8:42 GMT
Hundreds of Kurdish political prisoners have been on hunger strike in Turkey for 67 days. As their health has continued to worsen, politicians around the world have raised an eyebrow or two. There has been numerous solidarity protests around Europe, and 24-hour hunger strikes by Kurdish politicians were declared in support of those on hunger strike. They demanded an end to a founding member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party Abdullah Öcalan's isolation, and to allow the use of the Kurdish language in public spaces without discrimination. None of these demands have been met, but surprisingly a statement from Öcalan has been made, where he calls for an end to hunger strikes according to his brother Mehmet Öcalan.

If the Turkish prime minster moves away from Turkey's accession obligations and commitments, he will have to accept that EU candidacy for his country will be jeopardised – warns Hannes Swoboda MEP
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayipp Erdogan's statement in favour of reinstating the death penalty is disappointing, provocative and incompatible with European standards and values. Turkish authorities must understand that Turkey as a European Union candidate country for accession has rights but also obligations.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan took to the stage at Cairo University to condemn Israel for its attacks on Hamas military leaders, weapons depots, and missile launching pads in the Gaza Strip. “Everyone must know that sooner or later there will be a holding to account for the massacre of these innocent children killed inhumanely in Gaza,” he declared. Let us put aside the massacres of unarmed Kurdish children under Erdoğan’s watch. These have no parallel in the Gaza situation, where Israel puts its own soldiers at risk to avoid This is the same man who has railed against “the Jew;” has worked tirelessly to break Israel’s lawful (according to the United Nations) blockade of Gaza, an action meant to keep weaponry out of the hands of Hamas; and has called Hamas rocket strikes on Israel a hoax. This is also the same man whom President Barack Obama identified as one of the five foreign leaders closest to him personally.
