SPECIAL SCREENING: Do Not Forget Me Istanbul
Do Not Forget Me Istanbul was shown at the 17th London Turkish Film Festival, which ran from 24th November until 8th December 2011.
This collection of short films – strung together by sticking a shot of a ferry gradually departing the city between each story – was a project designed to coincide with events taking place to promote the 2010 Istanbul European Capital of Culture. Six directors from the Balkans and the Middle East were charged with the task of producing a fifteen minute short, the brief of which was to not only delve into the past of the city that apparently does not exclusively belong to the Turks, but to do so in a way that can connect with an audience unaware of Istanbul’s cultural diversity. By rounding up filmmakers with roots or experience of living in the city, project founder Hüseyin Karabey’s intention was to draw out a collective memory that would sweep aside the “memorialist” way of honouring a tragic past, and reinvent things so that events are never truly forgotten.
