For a long time the Justice and Development Party, or AKP, and its leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was seen as something of a 'Godsend' for Turkey by the West. It's embracing of Turkey's European Union bid, as well as new approach to the Cyprus problem shortly after it was elected in 2002 helped to dispel any fears in the post 9/11 period that 'Islamists had taken over Turkey.'"
