By Emine Merve Keser, JTW
First census in Republic of Turkey was conducted four year after the War of Independence which revealed that the total population of the country was 13.6 million. When peace was spread in the country following the chaotic war years, there was a high and rapid increase in total size of the population. The highest level of birth rate was %0,028 in 1950s. However now, it is %0,013 and it is expected to be %0,009 in 2023. This means that Turkey’s population has started to decrease. Similarly, fertility rate of Turkey has been declining. While fertility rate was 7 per a woman in 1930s, it is now 2, 16 which shows the bottom line for the renewal of a population."
