AKP Wins Turkey's Elections, Loses Seats in Parliament

"AKP Wins Turkey's Elections, Loses Seats in Parliament

PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan led his party to a historic third time win, yet could not fulfill his dream to attain two-third majority in the parliament that would give him the power to write the new constitution single handedly. He recently had said in a TV interview that his heart’s desire was to transition Turkey to a strong presidential system, which now remains unlikely. The ruling AKP won the elections with 49.8% of the votes, followed by CHP with 25.9% and MHP with 12.9%. The biggest winner was the Kurdish BDP whose members ran as independents in order to bypass the very high threshold of 10% a party must pass to gain representation. They increased their seats from 26 to 36."
