A debate over the active role of some media outlets in laying the groundwork for military coups returned to the Turkish agenda on Thursday after a veteran journalist, Mehmet Ali Birand, made striking confessions about the contribution of the mainstream media to the military in anti-democratic practices over the years. The confessions are “belated but honest,” according to some of Birand's colleagues."
