Since it swept to power in 2002, Turkey’s Justice and Development (AK) party has faced accusations that it is bent on a creeping transformation of the country into a theocratic state. There is scant evidence to justify such claims. But another development is worthy of concern. After a long stint in power, unchecked by a dysfunctional political opposition, the party is starting to betray alarmingly heavy-handed tendencies."
