NOTES FROM ISTANBUL

"NOTES FROM ISTANBUL

The Süddeutsche Zeitung’s Kai Strittmatter offers an overview of the most recent developments in Turkish contemporary art. Istanbul may have ended its reign as one of the cultural capitals of Europe––without regret for many Istanbulers in the contemporary art scene. Yet the interest continues from abroad. Sotheby’s will be holding its third auction of Turkish contemporary art on April 7. The London house began auctioning this category in 2009; last year’s auction netted $4 million. Those interested can see a selection of works going on the block in Istanbul; most collectors of Turkish contemporary art come from the country."
