Irtiqa: Nature Editorial on detained Turkish Academics

"Nature Editorial on detained Turkish Academics
In the aftermath of the north-Africa uprisings, there are many eyes on Turkey as a potential democratic model for a majority-Muslim country. It has its own share of complicated history of military dictatorships and authoritarianism. With the Islamic Justice and Development Party (AKP) in power, the debate over the place of religion in politics and society has heated up. But science has also been folded into these debates - and AKP is looked upon with suspicion, especially with regards to science and evolution. The news that the government may have pressured to change the cover of popular-science magazine, Bilim ve Teknik, on Darwin's bicentennial did not really help (see earlier posts here and here). At the same time, it would be too simplistic to simply lump AKP with other Islamists (see Is 'Islamic Fundamentalism' on the Rise in Turkey?)."
