Erdogan has lately given the West a fright by appearing to court the approval of radical Islamists and it may have been that scare that prompted the European Union, which Turkey has been trying for years to enter, to praise Turkish progress. "Turkey has been making remarkable steps toward membership," said Stefan Fule, the commissioner for European Union enlargement. Full Turkish membership has run into opposition from France and Germany, but the EU may be starting to see virtue in a compromise."
