ANKARA, Turkey -- A Turkish tycoon-turned-politician has been convicted of establishing a crime ring, forging official documents and swindling, and sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Cem Uzan, who once owned Turkey's second largest mobile telephone company and some banks, did not attend Thursday's trial because he is living in France and seeking asylum there."
