Turkish lira weakens, Kurdish party closure case eyed

"Turkish lira weakens, Kurdish party closure case eyed

ISTANBUL, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Turkey's lira weakened while bonds and shares were steady on Tuesday as investors looked to a Constitutional Court hearing of a case that could close Turkey's largest pro-Kurdish party.
The lira was slightly weaker at 1.4945 against the dollar versus the previous day's 1.4940 on the interbank market. Istanbul stocks were down 0.06 percent at 49,887 at 0750 GMT.
The closure of the Democratic Society Party (DTP), the country's only Kurdish party in parliament, could increase ethnic and political tensions, which has already seen street protests in predominantly Kurdish southeast Turkey ahead of the court hearing set for Tuesday.
The European Union, which Turkey aims to join, has warned that the closure case could violate Kurds' political rights."
