...Turkey, as a member country of the Kyoto Treaty, has designed a strategy consisting of short, medium, and long term goals to cope with the negative effects of climate change and global warming. The main parts of the strategy are the support of renewable energy sources and the recycling of waste materials and reforestation efforts. Power plants will not be permitted to exceed 7 percent of gas emissions in 2020. Environment Minister Veysel Eroglu said, “We are aiming to prevent 181.4 million tons of gas emissions by 2020 thanks to those measures.” Turkey has not set a specific goal to reduce gas emissions, instead drawing a road map about what to do until 2010. Several environmental organizations have stated numerous times that Turkey’s target should be at least a 30 percent reduction by 2020. This is because its emissions have risen quickly, from 170 million tons in 1990, to 372 million tons in 2007, as its annual per capita income rose from $3,000 in 1990 to $10,000 in 2007. "
