"Turkey’s Uncertain Future
By Michael Rubin
IHC Abstract
[ARAB COUNTRIES] The legal case against the AKP is an affirmation of democracy not an assault on it, because democracy rests on the rule of law and no politician or political party is above it. The AKP deserves credit for its service to the people of Turkey and has revolutionized Turkish politics, but popularity and democracy are not synonymous. Turkish constitution separates religion from politics, but its prime minister has abused this separation, eroded the distinction between religious and public education, sought to replace judges who disagree with his constitutional interpretations and replace them with AKP apparatchiks and to evaluate government technocrats on the basis of religiosity rather than merit. He has been extremely hostile to the press, sued journalists and editors and transferred their control to party loyalists."
