Turks might be forgiven if the current political crisis in their country evokes a sense of déjà vu.
In 1997, the coalition government of Necmettin Erbakan, Turkey's first Islamic prime minister, was forced to resign in a non-violent coup – or what became known, with typical Turkish irony, as “the postmodern coup.” He had come to power using provocative rhetoric, calling for an Islamic currency and an Islamic United Nations."
