....Turkey has seen an 18.6% increase in total crime from 2003 to 2006. Much of this is attributable to organized crime groups currently active in casinos, nightclubs and prostitution. Shootings are also more common than they were in 2003. There were a whopping 3,852 homicides reported to the Turkish police in 2006, higher than any other country in the European Union; England and Wales were second with 755. These are the most recent years in which all country records are available (and thus comparable). Turkey has yet to become a member of the European Union, and its crime problems will almost certainly make it difficult to meet the strict criteria required to join"
