I’ve been teaching about the Modern Middle East for some time, and I’ve taught about what I have seen as some strong parallels between economic decisions made by the Ottomans in the 1870s with what we see today. Recently in “Israel Letter—Middle East Commentary by Richard Baehr” I came across an excellent article, ”An Ottoman warning for America,” by Professor Niall Ferguson of Harvard University and Harvard Business School.
