Adult education in Turkey focuses chiefly on literacy courses. According to a national census held in 2000, Turkey´s adult population (15 years and above as confirmed by UNESCO) numbers in excess of 47.5 million, and13.5 % of these individuals are illiterate. 80 per cent of adult females are illiterate. One in 5 females of school-age is also illiterate. Literacy course are thus focused mainly on women, especially those living in the Eastern and South Eastern regions of the country and on the outskirts of the cities."
