The US has erred badly by allowing the visit to Ankara of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to occur without taking any tangible steps to diminish the PKK threat to Turkey. This US failure alienates a valuable NATO ally, insults the very popular newly elected Prime Minister Erdogan, emboldens the PKK, lines up US forces in northern Iraq with the PKK, and calls into question for the first time the US security role in the Middle East."
