The privileged tax status enjoyed by rakı might have to be lifted prior to opening the European Union's (EU) taxation chapter said Can Buharalı. Buharalı, partner of �Istanbul Ekonomi,� a consultancy firm guiding international investment in Turkey and prompting Turkish companies to comply with EU regulations, said on Turkey's national anise-based alcoholic beverage: �Turkish rakı producers can put an exemption clause in EU regulations on taxation, if they do their work right. This issue must be taken as a technical issue,� he said. "
