"Koehler approves law opposed by Ankara
Almost six weeks after receiving a letter of appeal from Turkey's outgoing President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, who urged him to do the contrary, Germany's President Horst Koehler on Tuesday approved planned changes to German immigration rules, which Ankara believes are discriminatory. Announcing Koehler's approval, German presidential spokesperson Martin Kothe said yesterday that the president saw no element within the changes that could be considered a violation of the country's constitution. Ankara has been closely following the process concerning the approval of new amendments to a 2005 immigration law with regard to the sensitivity of the issue for Turkish citizens living in Germany."
