As the balance shifted toward political leadership in Turkey following the July 22 early general elections -- during which the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) won a resounding victory despite a massive campaign launched by the military-led secular elite to avoid this -- hopes were raised that the Turkish military's frequent intervention in even daily Turkish political life would be reduced."
