549 new MPs were sworn in yesterday at the ceremonial opening of the new Turkish parliament. Prior to taking their oaths Ahmet Turk, chairman of nationalist Kurdish DTP (Democratic Society Party) and his MPs made a gesture and approached Devlet Bahceli, the leader of the MHP (Nationalist Movement Party) and his party members and shook their hands. Photos of the handshakes were on the first pages of all the organs of Turkish media that applauded the event as symbol of reconciliation."
