ISTANBUL - North Babylon native Billy Hayes, whose ordeal in a Turkish prison was chronicled in the 1978 movie 'Midnight Express,' says he's sorry for the poor impression the film created of Turkey.

'I didn't write or direct the film, but I must accept my share of responsibility for the damage this film has done,' Hayes, 60, told reporters Friday in Istanbul, where he was a guest speaker at the second Istanbul Conference on Democracy and Global Security. 'It created a terrible impression of Turkey and the Turkish people that was not fair to them or true to my experience.'"
