Contrary to top-level European Union assurance that recognition by Ankara of the alleged genocide of Armenians is not a condition for full membership in the EU, a French member of the European Parliament claimed that it was a moral responsibility on the part of Turkey to recognize its past in order to join the 25-nation bloc."
