In the waning sun of Saturday afternoon, it was the sound of Sahin Günsel playing the oud that drew scores of tourists to Monterey's Custom House Plaza.

Earlier, it was the smell of garlic and the grilling adana kebap, a spicy Turkish kabob.

It was only natural that food would bring strangers together in the ninth annual Turkish Arts and Culture Festival, considering that the country's sophisticated cuisine offers 54 ways to cook an eggplant."
