Echo Online :: Opinions :: Americans have skewed view of Muslim mentality

"....The Muslim community includes people quite like any other -- the average Muslim is doubtlessly more concerned with personal struggles than ideological struggles. I spent two years in the Republic of Turkey, a secular nation that is over 99 percent Muslim. Doubtlessly, a lot of people weren't happy that my family (and our associated military base) was there. The same was true when I lived in South Korea for two years. This is generally an issue of American foreign policy and economics, not a religious issue.

When I lived in Turkey as a child, I played with Turkish children, and Turkish mothers and fathers would have me over to play with their children, fully aware of our religious and cultural differences. This should surprise no one: Turkey, with all of its government's misgivings, is a modern society. "
