The Turkish Cypriot elementary school teachers' union and the union of Turkish Cypriot professors lodged an appeal to the Supreme Court in Cyprus today against the Republic of Cyprus Minister of Education and Culture and the cabinet over the Turkish Cypriots' right to education.

The case was set for hearing on 9th February 2006.

The Turkish Cypriot unions question the Cypriot government decision to create a special class at the 18th elementary school in Limassol to train Turkish Cypriot children living in the town, claiming that the composition of the government cabinet is not that provided in the Constitution of the Republic, (seven Greek Cypriot and three Turkish Cypriot ministers) and that the decision was not debated in parliament with the participation of Turkish Cypriot members of the House of Representatives, and the decision was not published in the official gazette in Turkish.

Turkish and Greek and the two official languages of the Republic of Cyprus."
