An inward-looking approach to almost every issue we handle has always been a major handicap for any discussion in this country.
When we discuss Turkey's European Union accession bid, we tend to open any debate with the long-held belief that we have been right throughout the preceding decades and feel that somehow we have been �betrayed� by our European allies, who want nothing other than to carve off some ethnic �statelets� from Turkish territory. We often refer to this rather peculiar mindset extant in Turkey as a product of the so-called �Sevres syndrome.�"
