"Who is the 'Sick Man'?
There is plenty of nonsense in the article entitled, 'The Sick Man Europe-Again,' that was published in The Wall Street Journal. I can list the main ones as follows: The claim that 'Istanbul intellectuals feel an ideological hostility towards the United States' is a complete fabrication. On the contrary, with the exception of marginal circles, Turkish intellectuals in general have always turned their faces to the United States, rather than Europe. The respectability and prestige of the U.S. among the Turkish elite reached its peak during the [Bill] Clinton administration, and hit rock bottom during that of his successor, George W. Bush. Why? This is the main question that Americans, who want to understand Turkey, should try to answer. "
