ANKARA (Reuters) - The U.S. ambassador to Turkey, whose tenure coincided with a tense period in bilateral ties caused by U.S. policy in Iraq, will leave his post and retire from the foreign service in June.

Career diplomat Eric Edelman took the decision for personal reasons, a U.S. embassy spokesman said on Friday, dismissing suggestions his departure might be a reflection of strains in relations between NATO allies Washington and Turkey.

'This has nothing to do with U.S.-Turkey relations,' he said, adding Edelman might join another government agency or enter the private sector after leaving Ankara.

Edelman, who in his previous job worked in the office of U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, arrived in Turkey in August 2003 amid tense relations between Ankara and Washington. "
