UzReport: MiniaTurk - reflection of present and past times of Turkey

"MiniaTurk - reflection of present and past times of Turkey
21.12.2006 16:22:06

When I was planning to leave for Istanbul, I was not only advised, but also insisted that I should surely visit the park-museum MiniaTurk, as they explained to me - this is entire Turkey in the miniature.

And, as soon as I found free time, first I visited this park- museum. Within two hours I saw all most great construction, sometimes erected on the Anatolian soil. So, I would like to share my impressions with you. "

ISTANBUL, Turkey: A Kurdish Islamic militant group with reported ties to al-Qaida is re-emerging in Turkey after six years underground — and has started issuing vague but worrying threats, authorities say.

Turkish Hezbollah's rise parallels developments across the broader Muslim world, where the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon are believed to have served as powerful recruiting tools for radical Islamic groups."

EU takes step forward in Turkey accession

"EU takes step forward in Turkey accession
By David Brunnstrom and Darren Ennis

THE EUROPEAN Union took a step forward in accession talks with Turkey yesterday, just over a week after partially freezing negotiations due to Ankara's refusal to open ports to Cyprus.
EU ambassadors backed a 'screening report' on how Turkey's enterprise and industry policies relate to EU requirements, after Cyprus, for the first time in months, did not obstruct a step in its rival's accession talks, officials said.

Approval of the screening report is an initial move towards launch of one of the chapters, or policy areas, into which EU accession talks are split. Turkey has completed just one of 35 chapters since beginning its accession talks in October 2005."

VOA News - Turkey Debates Its Future

"Turkey Debates Its Future
By Simon Marks
Istanbul
20 December 2006

Talks between the government of Turkey and the European Union have stalled over Turkey's refusal to allow Greek-Cypriot ships to dock in its ports. The Turkish government insists that it's still serious about seeking membership of the European Union, despite opinion polls that show support for the idea is falling inside the country. Turkey itself is now gripped by a debate over the country's future direction. And as Correspondent Simon Marks reports from Istanbul, the future of its secularist nature may be at stake."

"Making the Turkish connection

Yesterday I took part in a discussion with 90 people from the UK’s Turkish communities on how they can benefit and become involved in 2012 Games. The Turkish community has a significant presence in the UK, especially in London. Anybody who knows areas like Hackney, Waltham Forest, and Islington in London will be fully aware of the social and cultural influence the Turkish community has. What was noticeable from last night’s event was the hunger for information on the Games and the desire for the Turkish community play an integral role, whether it be through employment, business, volunteering, or contributing to the cultural programme."
