The Australian: Framing the future for Turkey [February 24, 2005]

"Framing the future for Turkey
Nicolas Rothwell
February 24, 2005
SLEEKLY contoured, its low grey bulk rising beside the docks and port buildings of Karakoy, the newly inaugurated Istanbul Museum of Modern Art immediately proclaims its affiliations and its cultural aspirations.

Everything about this austere structure, from its concrete walls and brushed steel stairwells to its installations and computer cafes, invites comparison with the familiar global palazzos of contemporary art: London's Tate Modern is even the subject of an admiringly subversive piece of video art on display in the opening season. Agenzia Giornalistica Italia - EU: PERA, NO GRADING, BUT COMPARISON WITH TURKEY

"EU: PERA, NO GRADING, BUT COMPARISON WITH TURKEY
(AGI) - Istanbul, Turkey, Feb 23 - 'The process for Turkey's entry into the EU must be used positively by Turkey as well: it's not the case that the EU has to grade Turkey, but a comparison is necessary', said Senate Speaker Marcello Pera, meeting the community of Italian entrepreneurs in Istanbul. The EU must not even give grades on the religious fundamentalist phenomenon. According to Pera it is necessary to 'monitor' the phenomenon but 'it is not Europe that must give grades, it would not be right or opportune, even considering recent and current Turkish history. The monitoring must be made by Turkey itself, i.e. it should face the open issues. (AGI) . "

Addressing a gathering of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) at the parliament, Erdogan said some communication problems that emerged between friendly and ally countries from timeto time could not harm bilateral relations between Ankara and Washington.
'Differences between countries which can understand each other can not be turned into a tension because of the speculations,' Erdogan said. "

JTW Article - The Civilisational Differences As a Condition for Turkish Full-Membership to the EU

"The Civilisational Differences As a Condition for Turkish Full-Membership to the EU
Dr. Sedat Laciner

Introduction
In 1693, William Penn asserted that the Ottoman state be included only if it renounced Islam. Neumann and Welsh claim that this notion of an entry requirement for European society has persisted even to the present day.[1] Similarly, many European politicians clearly declared that Turkey was not a true European because its people were Muslim and belong to a different civilisation. As a matter of fact that, contrary to the official agenda of the European Union (EU), it is clear that Turkey-EU relations cannot be understood without referencing to the civilisational/cultural dimension. This study explores the role of the civilisational differences between the two sides in the relations."

Since then, Turkish police officers studying in the United States have been able to share their own experiences fighting Middle Eastern terrorism.
'In order for the U.S. to respond to terrorism, the most important thing is cooperation,' said Suleyman Ozeren, a graduate student in UNT's Turkish Institute for Police Studies.

Hellenic News of America:ISTANBUL GREEKS SEEK JUSTICE IN LAND CLAIMS

"ISTANBUL GREEKS SEEK JUSTICE IN LAND CLAIMS

Turkey is trying to bring its laws on minorities in tune with those of the EU, but ethnic Greeks living in the capital say they are victimized through unfair land expropriations.

By George Gilson - Athens News

VARTHOLOMEOS, ecumenical patriarch and archbishop of Constantinople, is wont to call the 2,000-strong Greek community of Istanbul a 'drop in the ocean'.

Shrunken and scarred by the violent vicissitudes of Greek-Turkish relations over the decades, that drop is now in danger of evaporating. Despite reforms for the protection of minorities intended to bring Turkey in line with European Union law, the leaders of Istanbul's Greek community are struggling for basic rights.

That includes establishing the legal grounds to claim back around 400 pieces of prime Istanbul real estate gradually confiscated by the Turkish state since 1974. 'The confiscated property was certainly worth billions of dollars. We are talking about entire apartment buildings and tracts of city land that produced significant revenues,' says Vasslis Kalamaris, an attorney for the patriarchate."

CJAD 800 : Turkish bestseller describes war against America, exposing fears

"Turkish bestseller describes war against America, exposing fears
Updated at 20:47 on February 22, 2005, EST.
ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - It's the year 2007, and U.S. troops in northern Iraq fire on a group of Turkish commandos, setting off a war between the two NATO allies.
U.S. tanks quickly pour across the Iraqi border into Turkey, annihilating Turkish forces while U.S. warplanes target Istanbul. A Turkish agent, acting on his own initiative, exacts his revenge. He detonates a nuclear bomb in a park in Washington that levels the U.S. capital.
Turkey's new hot-selling novel is Metal Storm, and although it is pure thriller, it highlights the deep fears that many Turks harbour that the U.S. invasion of Iraq will put the decades-long allies on a collision course. "

British MPs urge Turkish troop withdrawal from Cyprus ?

"British MPs urge Turkish troop withdrawal from Cyprus ?

POL-CYPRUS-MPS British MPs urge Turkish troop withdrawal from Cyprus LONDON, Feb 22 (KUNA) -- Turkey should withdraw troops from northern Cyprus in order to boost efforts to heal the rift with the south and ease Ankara's path into the European Union, British MPs said in a report Tuesday.
The House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee warned that Turkish accession to the EU "in practice ... will be impossible for as long as there is no settlement of the Cyprus problem."
But while urging the Turks to reduce their military presence on the divided island, the Committee also warned the Greek-leaning Republic of Cyprus in the south, which has already joined the EU, against regarding its membership as a means of gaining leverage over Turkey or the Turkish Cypriots.
The Committee, chaired by senior Labour MP Donald Anderson, called on the British Government to promote trade and contacts between Britain and northern Cyprus, even in the absence of a settlement.
At the same time it urged the Government to use its presidency of the EU in the second half of this year to assist the search for an overall settlement in the former British colony."

Green Money, Islamist Politics in Turkey - Middle East Quarterly - Winter 2005

"Green Money, Islamist Politics in Turkey
by Michael Rubin

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Reconciliation Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi, AKP) swept to victory in Turkey's parliamentary elections on November 3, 2002. More than two years later, the Islamic-oriented party finds itself more popular than ever. But while the AKP came to power on the strength of its image as fresh and honest amid a sea of corrupt establishment parties, the AKP's own finances have become murky and worrisome. At best, it appears that AKP leaders have blurred the distinction between business and politics. More troubling yet is the pattern of tying Turkish domestic and foreign policy to an influx of what is called Yesil Sermaye, 'green money,' from wealthy Islamist businessmen and Middle Eastern states."

"Turkey pays families to get girls into the classroom

Helena Smith in Ankara
Tuesday February 22, 2005
The Guardian

The Turkish government is paying families to 'encourage' them to send their daughters to school, as part of its efforts to bring the number of girls in education into line with European standards.
More than half of Turkey's young female population has no schooling, according to the United Nations children's fund, Unicef.
In the Kurdish-dominated east, most are forced to stay at home, unacknowledged by society from the day of their unregistered births. Girls and women account for the vast majority of the 7 million people believed to be illiterate in the predominantly Muslim state. "

AZG Armenian Daily:ARMENIAN TO COOPERATE WITH TURKISH IN ECOLOGY

"ARMENIAN TO COOPERATE WITH TURKISH IN ECOLOGY

Though rather experienced in international cooperation in political and economic spheres, Armenia has not gone much far in the sphere of ecology despite its potential. There is much to do to control waters, woods in contiguous territories of Armenia and to secure them from being misused. It is envisaged that the Global Ecology Fund will finance an ecological program of regional importance. An agreement was reached with Germany to allocate money for creating a reserve on Javakhk’s territory. Neighboring Georgia and Turkey that form one ecological zone with Armenia are also included in the program. That will be a comprehensive program once Turkey gives its content."
