Why Turkey wants Kurdish oil
There are two types of countries in the world – those in which you get to your email as soon as you turn on your smart phone at the airport and those in which you do not. Arbil’s sleek International Airport in northern Iraq puts its country in the first type. It is part of our civilization. The airport was modernized in 2010, by a Turkish construction company of course. That didn’t mean, however, that Turkey’s energy minister was welcome. Baghdad did not allow his private jet to land, preventing the minister from participating at an oil and gas conference in the city.

Istanbul gets right under the skin
Lying half naked atop a marble slab beneath the dome of a building that's hundreds of years old, I have a surprising experience. It has little to do with being without my clothes in front of strangers, or even to do with relishing the occasionally discombobulating experience of being in a strange city on the other side of the world by myself. No, it has to do with shedding layers of dead skin.

Istanbul’s Blue Mosque sits on the brink of modernity, with a hint of traditional.
ISTANBUL: It is early morning in the popular tourist area of Sultanahmet in Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul. The sun is just beginning to peak over the row of historic sites and the minarets of the world’s most famous Hagia Sofia and Blue mosques as the residents meander through the narrow back streets trying to beat the morning rush. The call to prayer begins to bellow from a nearby local makeshift mosque, but is quickly drowned out by the latest Turkish hit as two youths drive by, speakers’ blaring.
