"Yalcın Doğan: A solution to the Kurdish situation is still out there
The Democratic Society (DTP) Party official from Siirt who called on Kurdish citizens to protest is young, still a university student. He is in his twenties. Would the DTP really have such a hard time finding a reasonable person to take this guy's place? For the past week now, I have been watching and reading about the events taking place in the Southeast and in Istanbul from abroad. The stance of the foreign press as to what is taking place here is frightening: they present it with headlines like 'Kurdish uprising in Turkey.' They don't perceive it as terror. To counter this, I have been listening to the opinions of some of my collegues who have actually been in Diyarbakir, and seen the events live and in person."

"TURKEY AIMS TO FOSTER DIALOGUE BETWEEN WEST AND MIDDLE EAST
Yigal Schleifer 4/03/06
After decades of keeping the Arab and Muslim countries of the Middle East at an arm’s length, Turkey is trying to strengthen relations with its neighbors, while at the same time recasting itself as a regional mediator.
Turkish officials say the new policy maximizes the benefit of the country’s strategic position and historic ties in the Middle East, adding that it will help bring stability to the area. Critics inside and outside the country, however, are accusing the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) of adopting an 'Islamist' foreign policy that is driven by a sentimental wish for Turkey to be a leader in the Islamic world. The new outlook could end up harming Turkey’s interests by damaging its relations with the United States and European Union, critics add."

3 April 2006
BRUSSELS — New figures indicate that just 11 percent of Turkish and Moroccan women living in Belgium are employed.
The figures are taken from the sample group of Turkish and Moroccan women aged 15-64.
In comparison, the national statistics office said 54 percent of native Belgian women in the same age group have a job.
Liberal VLD MP Annemie Turtelboom claimed the disparity means many immigrant women are not being allowed to work.
She urged for government measures to be taken, such as obligating unemployed women to learn Dutch or the suspension of social security benefits if people refuse employment."

"Turkey’s European Perspective Faltering
(Murat Sogangoz/JTW/Ankara) Recent developments in European politics are not so promising for Turkey’s EU accession process. Borders of Europe and enlargement are intensely discussed in European policy quarters. Generally, the momentum of EU politics seems to be inclined in excluding Turkey from Europe. As the reflection of this reluctance of some EU leaders, the accession negotiations of Turkey have not started yet actually and Ankara may be due to new stricter criteria in the negotiations. Cyprus issue also is another issue that has a potential of making the EU-Turkey relations break down. "

The European People's Party (EPP) approved a controversial decision over the weekend urging Turkey to withdraw its forces from Cyprus as a part of efforts to ease tension and pave the way for a possible solution on Cyprus.
In its decision the EPP also calls on the United Nations to set a timetable for the withdrawal of Turkish forces.
It sparked criticism from Turkish Cypriots and Turkish circles who say that Annan plan, which foresees the withdrawal of Turkish forces from the island, was rejected by the Greek Cypriots, not the Turkish Cypriots."

My worries over Turkey's European Union route were strengthened, rather than alleviated, after half a week spent in Paris. I was one of the participants of the traditional brainstorming sessions of the renowned Abant Platform that convened in the French capital for 2006's annual encounter and dialogue. The Abant Platform, since its inception in 1998, has become a most tolerant, vivid and fruitful occasion for an exchange of ideas and getting to know each other, especially the 'other.' The Paris gathering was no exception to its reputation, with a number of prestigious French opinion-makers and intellectuals taking part for the first time."

"Turkish ban on Cyprus ships constitutes biggest problem for registry

The Turkish ban on Cypriot vessels is the number one problem for the Cypriot shipping industry, local press reported on Sunday.
The Cyprus Shipping Council (CSC) president Andreas Droussiotis was quoted as saying that the ban had caused hundreds of ships over the years to re-flag out of Cyprus and prevented hundreds of other ships from using the Cyprus Registry.
Droussiotis said the issue had now become a European one since Turkey signed the customs union protocol with the 10 new member states, including Cyprus.
The CSC president welcomed the EU's counter-statement in October last year that clearly said the embargo on Cypriot ships must be lifted within 2006."

MARDIN, Turkey (Reuters) - Like most Turkish men, Gabriel Oktay Cilli likes to drink tea with his mates and go to soccer matches.
However, one detail marks him out sharply in this overwhelmingly Muslim country: every Sunday he goes to church.
On the wall of his jewellery shop, next to the more familiar portrait of modern Turkey's founder Kemal Ataturk whose image decorates stores, restaurants and offices throughout the country, hangs a picture of Jesus Christ and his disciples.
Cilli belongs to one of Turkey's most ancient communities, the Syriac Christians, who still speak a form of Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus. In Turkey they number barely 20,000, down from 250,000 when Ataturk founded the republic in 1923."

Issues such as, “Globalization and Liberalism” and “What kind of a Europe?,” were discussed in the last part of the meeting. The intellectuals questioning the future of Europe agreed on the idea that Turkey’s European Union (EU) membership would make a significant contribution to Europe. Professor Nilufer Gole told that intellectuals from both countries came together for the first time in this frame explaining that, “The intellectuals laid their hearts beyond the discussions. This is crucial for the bilateral relations.” French philosopher Olivier Abel told Europe needs Turkey for its own future. “Europe should accept Turkey as a member in order to complete its democratization,” he noted. Turkish ban on Cyprus ships biggest problem for registry
"Turkish ban on Cyprus ships biggest problem for registry
By Jean Christou
THE TURKISH ban on Cypriot vessels is the number one problem for the shipping industry, the Cyprus Shipping Council (CSC) said this week.
Addressing the CSC’s annual general meeting on Friday, its president Andreas Droussiotis, said the ban had caused hundreds of ships over the years to re-flag out of Cyprus and prevented hundreds of other ships from using the Cyprus Registry.
“In recent years, the Turkish ban has been milder in cases of non-Cyprus flag ships being managed from Cyprus calling in Turkey,” he said. “This however, damaged our flag as we did not get the share we expected from the international market.”
Droussiotis said the issue had now become a European one since Turkey signed the customs union protocol with the 10 new member states. However, Ankara still refuses to lift the ban on Cypriot ships."

PKK: strategy of chaos?
"PKK: strategy of chaos?
4/2/2006 KurdishMedia.com - By Thomas Jézéquel
It has been obvious, since January 2004 and the clash between Osman Öcalan and Murat Karayilan, that the warmonger wing of the PKK had taken control of the party.
Increasing fights in 2005, targeted murders against members of the PWD, and blind bomb attacks in Kurdistan and in Western Turkey were a sign that the democratization of Turkey was not welcomed by the new leadership of PKK. TAK, who claimed the attacks against foreign tourists in Cesme and Kuşadası is said to be an “uncontrollable group” operating independently from the PKK. Funnily enough, it would probably be the first Kurdish group to achieve this: in the past every attempt to build a independent group or party, in Kurdistan, Turkey or Europe, was mercilessly crushed. There can only be one voice of the Kurds, and this voice is Öcalan’s. The idea of a TAK conducting bomb attacks against the will of PKK is thus hard to believe. "

Despite numerous statements that 2006 is auspicious for settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the problem will not be settled this year, Armenian MP Armen Ashotyan is quoted as saying at a news conference on April 1. According to him, proposals on deployment of peacekeeping corps in the conflict settlement and staging a referendum in Nagorno Karabakh in 15 years are illusions. “We do not know what the situation will be in 15 years, what demographic situation will be in Nagorno Karabakh. After long years of terrorism and violence peace had been restored in practically all of our southeastern provinces thanks to the positive atmosphere created in the past few years.
First it was the military that understood that by using repression and iron-fist tactics all they did was to further alienate the people who are predominantly citizens of Kurdish origin. So the military changed its tactics and started putting more emphasis on human rights and attending to the needs of the local masses. So this was a major factor that contributed to the positive atmosphere created in the region."

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The bathrobe you might be wearing right now was probably made in Turkey. The ornamental stone at your favorite restaurant could well be Turkish.
But that's not nearly enough, argued Kürsad Tüzmen, Turkey's dapper and determined trade minister.

"EU Official, Study Criticize Pace of Turkish Military Reform
By BROOKS TIGNER, BRUSSELS
Turkey’s effort to establish full civilian control over its military per Western norms has slowed in the last year, European Union experts say, though Turkish officials argue the country is making steady progress in that direction.
Ankara’s aim is to adopt European standards in all fields to prepare for eventual EU membership. But the general perception in EU circles “is that the pace of change of Turkey’s reform has slowed down in the last year,” Alessandro Missir di Lusignano, desk officer for Turkey at the European Commission, told a meeting of EU and Turkish officials here March 31, sponsored by the Center for European Policy Studies (CEPS)."

HURRIYET- We flew from Sudan, one of the poorest and most troubled countries in Africa, to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the night before. The reason for the visit to Jeddah, which was added to the program at the last minute, was the Organization for the Islamic Conference (OIC). Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s advisors said that for the first time a Turk, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, was the OIC’s secretary general and that Erdogan had wanted to visit him for a long time. Ihsanoglu was appointed at a time when the OIC was planning institutional reforms, and he’s actively working on the issue. The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) wants to draw a new profile for Turkey firstly with this week’s Arab League summit and then with the visit to the OIC. Erdogan explained this profile to the Islamic media at a press conference at OIC headquarters yesterday as follows: ‘On the one hand, there is a Turkey which started membership talks with the European Union, and on the other, there is a Turkey which undertook the secretariat general of the OIC.’"

ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet and other top central bankers also renewed calls for governments to speed up reforms and keep budget deficits in line, particularly given Europe's ageing population.
Their focus backed market expectations that the ECB will raise interest rates again soon, as new figures showed business confidence firming and inflation stubbornly high."
