Turkey's progress report did not surprise anyone

At the beginning of the year President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that 2014 would be the year of Turkey-EU relations. However, in the aftermath of the Dec. 17 corruption scandal, which kicked off a series of steps aimed at restricting civil liberties and freedoms, there was little hope that relations between the EU and Turkey would blossom. The EU's critique of developments in Turkey was not received well in Ankara, with Turkey's leadership claiming the EU was part of a conspiracy plot by the “parallel state,” aka the Gülen movement, to ouster the government.
