Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister and winner of eight electoral contests, including three general elections on a rising share of the vote, has dominated his country in a way that can be compared only with Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who built the Turkish republic out of the debris of the Ottoman Empire.
