Turkish Envoy: Ankara’s Urgent Problems Internal, Not External
The hard-line, sharply worded policies of the ruling party are reflected in its foreign policy as well. How to extract ourselves from these policies has become an important issue of debate. Some questions that need answers are: What are the consequences of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan acting almost as an activist for [ousted Egyptian President] Mohammed Morsi? Is Turkey becoming isolated? And is Erdogan likely to be a hero of the Middle East in the long term? We discussed all these issues with Ilter Turkmen, a former minister of foreign affairs and retired ambassador, one of the most experienced names in Turkish foreign affairs. Turkmen said that the most urgent and vital issues in Turkey's foreign affairs are relations with Israel and the Kurdish issue.
