Taksim square: Turkish government losing trust of its people

As Taksim Square continues to dominate the nightly news broadcasts of Europe, my mind wanders to the wonderfully busy square I walked through just over a month ago and where the government is now losing the trust of its people.
Istanbul is a city of contrasts. Most tourists will comment on the fact that many women don’t wear hijabs, in spite of Turkey being a Muslim country. The area around Taksim Square seemed especially progressive. The symbols of the Turkish communist party were proudly displayed in its headquarters opposite a McDonald’s. The situation seems very similar to many of Europe’s most popular cities.
