Istanbul plans a bridge too far for protesters

ISTANBUL: The anti-government unrest gripping Turkey began unexpectedly with a small protest against the razing of an Istanbul park, but protesters say it was the last straw in a string of ambitious construction projects that have pitted the government against local residents. Activists say the fight for Gezi Park, which led to a fierce police crackdown, is about more than just saving a few trees in the country’s largest city. They claim they are taking a stand against years of grandiose urban development plans that have forced people from their homes and destroyed green spaces.
