Istanbul is no stranger to grandiose schemes and far from all of them have yet seen the light of day. But by 2016 the mega-city should be inaugurating the Istanbul International Financial Centre which will allow it to sit on the same stage as the globe’s other powerhouse financial exchanges. The construction is part of the government’s plans to cement the importance of the east-west bridgehead city, leveraging its geography and robust economy to take a pivotal position within the financial world. The ailing health of the EU market to which Turkey so wants to be a part only underlines that what once looked hugely ambitious now seems very real, says Mark Faithfull.
