Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is pretty indirect
By Mark Harris, February 2, 2012
Starring Muhammet Uzuner, Taner Birsel, and Yilmaz Erdogan. In Turkish with English subtitles.
Ever since L’Avventura divided audiences at Cannes more than 50 years ago, cutting-edge cinema has been characterized by formal complexity. Immensely fond of extended takes, tricky sequence shots, undemonstrative acting, and narrative minimalism, the less successful of these films can fairly—if uncharitably—be described as long, slow, and boring. On the other hand, when this difficult formula actually works, the end result can be so splendid it provides the viewer with a radically new apprehension of the world.
