Turkish Cypriot leader clung to idea of partition

Rauf Denktash, the former Turkish Cypriot leader whose determined pursuit of a separate state for his people and strong opposition to the divided island’s reunification defined a six-decade political career, died in northern Cyprus on Friday, January 13. He was 87 and had long suffered from heart disease. He is survived by his wife Aydin, two daughters and a son, two other sons having predeceased him.
