Freezing EU relations is an honourable, face-saving path

Sir, I totally agree with the observation about Cyprus in your editorial “Talking Turkey” (October 6) that “the European Union’s original sin was to admit the divided island in 2004’’, mainly based on the fact that Cyprus’s accession would isolate Turkish Cypriots and make a fair solution permanently impossible. Nevertheless, I have difficulty in understanding your sudden shift and the claim that “Ankara’s actions make it hard for Turkey’s more enthusiastic supporters’’, citing Turkey’s decision to freeze relations with the EU in the event that the Republic of Cyprus assumes the EU presidency.
