When the Republican People’s Party (CHP) gained parliamentary seats in Turkey’s June 12 elections, the success was largely credited to the party’s new leader, Kemal Kiliçdaroglu. Kilicraoglu was praised for injecting new blood and energy into the CHP, a self-described socialist-democratic party that was established by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, and claims to be Turkey’s oldest."
