Turkey has been known for long to be a geopolitically western oriented nation. With its membership of NATO and the ongoing negotiations over European Union membership it has even tied itself into the most important western alliances. The EU membership of Turkey remains, however, a controversial topic. There have been issues such as limitations to freedom of speech or repression of the media that have kept Turkey out of the European Union so far. Nonetheless, with a NATO membership in hands and EU negotiations already initiated, the membership seems an unstoppable locomotive that will at some point arrive. The question, however, is whether Turkey’s allegiances really still lay with the West in general or Europe specifically. "
